Claim: Bilingual experience protects executive function after COVID-19.
Bottom line
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the broad claim. In an online, cross-sectional sample, bilingual experience was associated with executive-function performance, with the most consistent behavioral expression in task switching. Among older adults, the relationship between COVID-19 history and task-switching performance differed according to second-language age of acquisition.
The study does not establish that bilingualism causally protects cognition after COVID-19, that learning a language after infection would improve recovery, or that the observed pattern generalizes across all executive functions, populations, or illness severities.
What the evidence supports
- A multivariate association between bilingual experience and executive-function measures in 312 adults aged 18 to 80.
- The clearest behavioral expression was in flexible task-switching performance.
- In older adults, COVID-related differences in switch cost varied with second-language age of acquisition.
- The pattern is consistent with a cognitive-reserve interpretation and justifies further longitudinal testing.
What the evidence does not establish
- Causal protection, because participants were not followed before and after infection.
- An intervention effect, because language learning was not experimentally assigned.
- Broad protection across all cognitive domains.
- Generalization to more medically vulnerable, less digitally connected, or clinically assessed populations.
